The Framework

The Viking Code — Eleven Principles

Vikings were not the barbaric raiders history made them. They were extraordinary navigators, master engineers, global traders and community leaders. Each principle is drawn from what Vikings actually did — and mapped directly to what separates the trade businesses that thrive from those that struggle.

Plan the Voyage
PRINCIPLE I
Plan the Voyage
Plan the Voyage
A ship without a heading is just drifting
Vikings never left shore without knowing where they were heading and what they needed to get there. In your trade business, working without a clear plan means every day is reactive — energy spent surviving instead of building.
Build Strong Ships
PRINCIPLE II
Build Strong Ships
Build Strong Ships
No green timber. No shortcuts.
Viking shipbuilders used only seasoned timber — green wood warps under pressure and fails at sea. Your business systems are the same: built properly from the start, they hold under pressure; built on shortcuts, they crack when you need them most.
Trust the Crew
PRINCIPLE III
Trust the Crew
Trust the Crew
No jarl built a legacy alone
A Viking jarl chose their crew with care, trained them well, and trusted them with the oars. In your business, the right people in the right roles — properly onboarded and genuinely trusted — are what allow you to step back without everything falling apart.
Adapt to the Storm
PRINCIPLE IV
Adapt to the Storm
Adapt to the Storm
Vikings didn't sail by hoping for good weather
Vikings built ships designed to flex in rough seas — rigid hulls would have shattered. The trade businesses that thrive don't just survive disruption; they're built to bend, adapt and keep moving when conditions change.
Protect the Village
PRINCIPLE V
Protect the Village
Protect the Village
The undefended village is vulnerable
Vikings fought fiercely for the communities they built — not just the raid, but the home worth returning to. In business, protecting your culture, your people, and your reputation is not soft work — it's what determines whether the best people stay or leave.
Explore New Lands
PRINCIPLE VI
Explore New Lands
Explore New Lands
The horizon is an invitation, not a boundary
Vikings reached North America centuries before Columbus — not by accident, but because they were willing to sail past what was known. Growth in your trade business requires the same courage: intentional, resourced, and brave enough to move before the path is certain.
Trade with Honour
PRINCIPLE VII
Trade with Honour
Trade with Honour
Reputation outlasts gold
Vikings were among history's most prolific traders, and their word was their bond — a broken deal closed every port on the route. Your reputation is your most valuable business asset; how you treat clients, suppliers and your crew determines whether doors stay open or close quietly.
Respect the Tools
PRINCIPLE VIII
Respect the Tools
Respect the Tools
It is never the system. It is always the people.
A Viking axe in untrained hands is just weight — in skilled hands, it changes everything. Your job management software is no different: the tool is only as powerful as the people using it properly, consistently, and with genuine commitment.
Learn from Every Voyage
PRINCIPLE IX
Learn from Every Voyage
Learn from Every Voyage
Every voyage that teaches you nothing was wasted
Viking navigators passed knowledge between generations — every route sailed, every storm survived made the next crew sharper. In your business, the jobs that go wrong and the decisions that miss are only costly if you don't extract the lesson and change how you operate.
Leave a Legacy
PRINCIPLE X
Leave a Legacy
Leave a Legacy
Build it so your children have a choice
The greatest Viking jarls built settlements, not just raids — things that outlasted them and gave the next generation something to build on. A trade business built on strong systems and capable people has real, transferable value — it becomes a legacy, not just a living.
Know Your Why
PRINCIPLE XI
Know Your Why
Know Your Why
Stop waiting for permission
Vikings didn't sail because someone told them to — they sailed because they knew what they were chasing and why it mattered. When you're clear on why you're building this business, every hard decision gets easier and every sacrifice makes sense.

The Viking Code for Trade Business Owners

Eleven principles for building a business that works without you, lasts beyond you — and means something.

Most trade businesses are not poorly run. They are under-systemised. There is a difference — and it changes everything about how you fix it.

Trade Like a Viking draws on twenty years of consulting with trade businesses across Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States — and on the real operational wisdom of the Viking Age — to deliver a framework that is practical, honest and genuinely different.

  • Author — Trade Like a Viking, Stop. Think. System. & The Unfinished Woman

I've spent more than twenty years working inside trade businesses as a systems and operations consultant — Simpro implementations, process documentation, staff onboarding programs, operational audits, and everything in between.

I've worked with businesses across Australia, New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. I've sat with hundreds of trade business owners at the exact moment they realised their business was running them — and helped them change it.

The Viking Code isn't a framework I invented. It's one I discovered — in twenty years of watching what separates the trade businesses that thrive from the ones that struggle.

"I don't create dependency. I build capability. My goal is to make you so good at running your own business that you genuinely don't need me anymore."

"

During our transition to new software, I faced resistance from employees struggling with change. Thanks to Erika, everything fell into place. She was knowledgeable, organised, and incredibly patient, delivering clear, seamless instruction.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What trades do you work with?
Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, construction, fire protection, solar, security, refrigeration — any field service or trade business where work happens on-site. The Viking Code principles apply regardless of your specific trade.
Do I need to be on Simpro to work with you?
No. The Viking Code is software-agnostic. Erika has deep Simpro expertise built over many years, but the framework applies to any trade business using any software — or no software at all.
I'm a solo operator — is this relevant to me?
Absolutely. Solo operators often have the most to gain because everything depends on one person — you. The Viking Code gives you the framework to grow in a way that doesn't require you to be present for everything.
What is the Viking Code Program and do I have to join?
The Viking Code Program is an eleven-week live cohort that takes you through all eleven principles with Erika and a group of like-minded trade business owners. There is absolutely no obligation. Consulting services are available independently of the program.
Where are you based and do you work remotely?
Erika is based in regional Queensland, Australia and works with clients across Australia, New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland. Most sessions are delivered online. Onsite work can be arranged in some areas, primarily within Queensland.
When is Trade Like a Viking available?
Trade Like a Viking is coming soon. You can download a free sample chapter now — Chapter I: Plan the Voyage — including Erika's origin story and the Viking historical story that opens the first principle. Register your interest at erikaentz.com to be notified on launch.
